Who: Emma and Remus
When: August 10th, mid-afternoon
Where: Diagon Alley
Why: Because she desperately needs to escape
Rating: PG

After sweeping out the shop and restocking with her mother, Emma couldn't stand it anymore.  She was this close to screaming her head off.  And that wouldn't have been a good idea, since she was already on thin ice with her mother.  So she did the only thing she could think of doing.  Emma went out.

She'd shouted a goodbye to her mother before dashing of course.  And she had the whole afternoon ahead of her.  So long as she got into no trouble and was home for dinner, she didn't think she'd get in much trouble.  Emma was finally free.  Well, sort of anyway.  Wandering the streets, she let the whole atmosphere just sweep over her.  She'd been saving her money for something special for the school year, but nothing was striking her fancy.  Though there were some nice brooms on sale, she knew she'd never get that passed her mother.  Besides, it wasn't like she played Quidditch or anything.  She found herself in Flourish and Botts with her school list and wandered around, wistful, dreamy look on her face.

For the first time, she was calm.  It was a nice feeling.  The store was surprisingly quiet.  That is until she bumped into a pile of books and knocked them right over, hitting someone's leg.  "Oh, gosh!" she exclaimed, scrambling to pick them up.  "I am so sorry.  Lord, I am such an oaf sometimes."  Straightening, she smiled sheepishly.  "Are you alright?"

Remus smiled a bit more. "Well, they apparently didn't like me much either. And yes, I am in Gryffindor. You're in Hufflepuff? I think I've seen you around the library." He took her hand and squeezed it gently. "My name is Remus, Emma. It's nice to meet you."

"Remus. Nice to meet you too." He'd seen her in the library? That surprised her as she squeezed back. "And right on about my house. Enjoying your summer holidays?" Emma stepped around the other pile of books near by, avoiding sending them to Remus or herself.

"Ahh, as much as anyone can enjoy being stuck in a house in the middle of nowhere. Although I have to say my mum's been letting me out a lot more than usual. I've been seeing more of my friends than usual." He said, picking up the last of the books, which happened to have been the ones he was holding beforehand. "How has the holiday been for you?"

She laughed a little. "Probably very similar, though I just live up the street. My mum's been a little..." Emma searched for a good phrase to describe the woman who'd been making her summer less than enjoyable. "Over-protective, I suppose is the best word for it. I'm really looking forward to the start of term." She smiled sheepishly.

Though she loved her mother desperately, heading off to school would be extremely refreshing. If she hadn't spent so much time in the library over the past few years, she might have had more friends to escape with over the summer. That was something Emma was planning on changing. And it looked like she was off to a good start. "So shopping for school or pleasure?"

Remus nodded in understanding. "My mum is a tad bit overprotective herself. She usually doesn't let me out on my own, even though I am fifteen years old. My dad finally managed to talk her into it." He said, smiling. "I'm looking forward to start of term too, though."

"Right now I'm shopping for pleasure. I'm hoping to do my school shopping with some mates of mine. I'm just looking for a bit of reading for the rest of the holiday. You?"

Emma was truly grateful to be taking to someone who understood what she was going through. At least in some manner, shape or form. "Honestly, I'm just escaping my mother. I had no real sense of direction or anything. Probably why you had the unfortunate pleasure of having those books tumble into you before." She tried to laugh it off a little. "I really should have been watching where I was going. My legs just sort of carried me into the shop. My brain must having been trying to tell me I need to get a new book or something."

"Many a book has toppled down upon me due to my own and others' lack of direction. But it is quite alright. No harm done." He said, smiling again. "Perhaps it is fate then, that we met here of all places. Or, perhaps, just the call of two people who spend more time with books than other people?"

He was being really nice and she appreciated it. "My guess is a combination of both." Emma was smiling again, more than she had in several months. "Have you found anything interesting yet?"

Remus shook his head and shrugged. "Nothing terribly interesting. In fact, I was just looking at a few of our text books for this year. Trying to get an idea of what they were expecting, it being OWLs this year and all. Looks a bit complicated. I've not found anything pleasurable to read though. I've been tormenting myself with school. Have you got anything?"

Emma shook her head. "Just my old stand bys. Muggle literature is one of my favorite things to read. But I was hoping for something I wouldn't have to hide under the floor boards beneath my bed." Shrugging, she turned to the shelves, scanning them for anything interesting. "I should probably be worried about my OWLs, too, you know. But my mum is driving me a little insane." Sighing, she turned back to Remus, careful not to lean against the book case.

"Well, my mom drives me mental anyway, but I know she means well so I try not to mind too much. She'd get even worse if she thought I wasn't stressing out just a little bit over the exams. My dad has explained them all to her a million times so she knows how important they are." He smiled weakly. "It would almost be better if she didn't, I think. Now I have pressure from her and my dad to do well."

Remus glanced around and spotted some chairs located at a nearby table. "Shall we?" He asked, pointing to the chairs. "You probably can't topple over any books from there."

She nodded understandingly. "I usually put the pressure on myself. My dad used to be the one who pushed me to do my best. I guess I just got used to it." Emma followed his gaze and saw the tables. "Well, I certainly hope I won't knock something over."

She headed over and tucked her hair behind her ears. "I don't mean to sound strange, but I almost wish my mum would pressure me to do well." Emma sighed softly. "My mum... she actually doesn't want me to go back to Hogwarts." Her dark eyes glanced at him, wondering what he thought of her and her family now.

"I don't want to disappoint my parents. I don't need to play anymore pressure on myself. They've already got me in a press as it is." He said, trying to sound a little more light-hearted than he felt at the moment.

He glanced over at her with a serious expression. "Because of everything that's been going on? Or she just doesn't want you to leave home? I suppose I could understand both, the way things are. My mum was like that when I first left for Hogwarts... Because I was so ill as a child. She knows that Hogwarts is safe though. Maybe your mum just needs reminding? If that's the problem, of course."

"After everything that's happened to our family, she doesn't think that anywhere is safe. Honestly, I'm surprised that she hasn't whisked us away to some cave somewhere, hidden away from the world." She pulled out a chair and sat down. "I don't know what she thinks anymore. My aunt's gone, my dad missing. I can see where she's coming from but she can't see my point of view either. I want to make a difference and school is the way to do that. I need an education, right?" she asked, leaning her hand on her chin and blowing a strand of hair back from her face in slight frustration.

Glancing over at him, she actually realized everything she'd just said. Emma flushed a little. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to dump all that on you," she said softly. "I just... I don't have anyone to talk to anymore. It's just... hard."

Remus remained standing until she had pulled out her chair and sat down. He then followed suit, sitting next to her and turning his chair to face her and he listened to her speak, smiling his most comforting smile. "Well, she's just scared. People do crazy things when they're scared. But you're right, you do need your education. Otherwise you'll only have more things to be afraid of if you can't defend yourself from whatever might be out there. You'll just have to continue to try to make your point if going back to Hogwarts is what you really want."

He patted her lightly on the shoulder. "It's okay, really. Listening is what I do best and it seems like you have a bit to say." He smiled again. "Don't worry about it. Your mum will come around, she's just worried about you. No place is safer than Hogwarts, especially with Dumbledore around."

Emma listened as he spoke, realizing he was extremely rational. She wondered if his other friends thought the same thing. "I know," she said softly when he said she was going to have to make her mother see how important going back to school was for her.

When he patted her shoulder, Emma smiled more sheepishly. Remus was being perfectly nice and though she was sorry she dropped the books on his leg, she was glad it was him she'd done it too. "I supposed I should reminder her of Dumbledore's presence at school. I hope that will help some."

There were a few moments of silence and then she spoke again. "Thank you. For listening I mean. I really appreciate it." Emma decided it was high time to renew her brighter smile. "Let's talk about something else. Something happier. Here we are, two new friends and all we can seem to talk about is how our parents make us feel. We must have other things in common."

Remus smiled and shrugged. "Ah, well, you'll get back to Hogwarts with no problem. Just write to Dumbledore and have him remind her if it comes to it." The idea of parents stopping students from going to school seemed ridiculous to him, although he had to admit he could understand why a few of them were worried.

"Right. You're right. Let's find something else to chatter on about. What shall we talk about? Books? Quidditch? Perhaps there's something else you have in mind?"

Quidditch. There was a loaded question. "Honestly, I wish I had more practice. My dad loved Quidditch. He was a huge Pride of Portree fan. So proud that they won twice in my lifetime." Emma rolled her eyes a little. "He used to play with me. Played Chaser for him. He was a Keeper, back in the day, at Hogwarts." Her eyes sparkled a little, both with the sadness that he wasn't around and the joy that they shared something together she still loved. "What about you?"

"Ah, well, I don't really follow Quidditch. Well, I do, but indirectly through my dad and my friends. James and Sirius love Quidditch and I'm sure Peter does too. And my dad is a fan of the Quiberon
Quafflepunchers, some poncy team from France. They wear pink, of all colors. Imagine going to a match with your dad dressed in bright pink." He rolled his eyes. "Although if I had to pick a side, the Holyhead Harpies are pretty good, for being all girls."

Emma cringed. "Pink? How pink? Are we talking fluffy bunny or really loud?" she asked. Pink had to be one of the most ridiculous colors for a Quidditch team. She could onlt imagine what her father would say about that. Probably something about England having the only good teams.

"For being all girls?" she repeated. "What are you trying to say? That girls can't play Quidditch?" Her eyes had narrowed but her tone was all teasing.

Remus laughed dryly and looked around for an example of the correct shade of pink. "There's nothing here to compare it to." He said, glancing around again quickly. "It's bright, shocking pink. It's absolutely ridiculous. I can't believe any respectable Quidditch player would put those uniforms on, but their side isn't half bad sometimes. Nothing like any of the teams we have in Britain, but definitely better than some others. It's an embarrassment when they play England and my dad drags me along. If it makes him happy though..." He smiled fondly as if his dad's quirky tastes in Quidditch teams was just another of many eccentricities.

"For being all girls." He repeated, nodding a little. "Girls can play Quidditch fine. Those girls, however, play cut throat Quidditch. It makes the game more interesting." He grinned. "Not like those girls at Hogwarts. There's very few decent girl players there." He teased, though he knew perfectly well that all of the girls on the Quidditch teams at school were excellent.

"I'd imagine you'd be about as pink as his robes, then huh?" she teased. "But it's good to have something that you two can do together, you know?" Emma missed that.

"They are excellent," she said, speaking of the Harpies. "Always a great game to watch when they're playing. I think they were my aunt's favorite, but she'd never admit to following the game. She always liked to tag along when the Harpies were playing Prides." She grinned.

"Oh yeah? Well, what if I happened to try out for the team this year? You going to change your mind then?" Emma didn't know if there were any spots open, but she had to tease back.

"Yeah, he doesn't have much time for it these days. He's always at work. But the Ministry's in an uproar these days. I suppose it comes with the territory." He said quietly.

"You're trying out for Quidditch then? Good for you. I'm a decent flyer, but I don't do it unless I have to. And I have very little hand-eye coordination so I'm no good at Quidditch. Perhaps once you make the team there will be at least one quality girl on a Quidditch team at school."

Emma nodded, understanding that things were a bit crazy for everyone involved in the Ministry. "I suppose," she echoed softly.

She shrugged. "I'm trying to do a lot of things this year. My aunt always encouraged me to be out there, but I spent most of my time in the library. I know I have to work hard to get what I want, but she did too. And she had fun." Emma smiled fondly at the thought of what her aunt would say. "And apparently, according to you, someone needs to whip those girls into shape," she said with a wink.

"I suppose we will," she said, almost a gleam in her eye. Another goal for the year it seemed.

"Alright, I have a question for you. What was the last good book you read and why did you think so?" she asked, leaning her head on her hand. She loved to read and this seemed like a good question to feel out his tastes in books.

Remus sat for awhile and thought about her question. "Hmm, the last thing I read was a Muggle book. The Lord of the Flies. It was different, lots of symbolism. Mum recommended it to me, something about her reading it when she was at university. I like all sorts of books though, the escapism of them, I think. What about you?"

"The Lord of the Flies? I've never heard of it. I'll have to check it out though." Emma thought for a moment. "Honestly, the last thing I read was Pride and Prejudice. I've always been reading Muggle books. My aunt and my mum always read them growing up, so they gave them to me too. That's one of my favorites. I'm a sucker for a good love story sometimes," she admitted with a smile.

Remus smiled back and glanced around. "Admittedly I don't mind them myself sometimes. I only read them during the holidays though so I won't be teased endlessly by James and Sirius. They already think I'm as boring as a brick as it is. I have actually read Pride and Prejudice before. It's very good. Excellent taste."

Emma laughed. "Reading doesn't make you boring. I think it gives you more things to talk about, actually." "Assuming you have lots of people to talk with,' she thought to herself. "And thank you. It's always been one of my favorites. My copy is so weather-beaten. It was my mum's. My aunt's favorite was Emma."

She smiled as she continued. "I like older things. Dracula or Frankenstein, for instance. Sometimes I wonder how Muggles can be so imaginative and yet have no idea that some of the thing they dream of exist. Right under their noses. I know it's magic, but still..." She trailed off. It boggled her mind.
