Who: Emma and Lily
When: Friday afternoon, after Halloween
Where: Great Hall
What: Emma's studying... someone, anyone come distract the child

It had been a long week and Emma headed down to the Great Hall to get some work done.  Practice had been keeping her busy and making sure she was completely exhausted by the time the weekend rolled around.  They'd been training hard, their captain wanting to produce the best Quidditch team Hufflepuff had even seen.  So, loaded down with books, Emma made her way from her common room to the giant tables in the Great Hall.

She spread out her Potions homework and got to work on the essay they'd been assigned.  It wasn't her favorite subject and she wanted to get it out of the way so that she could work on the Defense essay and the one for Transfiguration.  McGonagal had them working on transfiguring buttons into ladybugs.  For some reason, she couldn't get the ladybug to be red and it was frustrating her.  She hoped that the essay would help her out in some way.  Sighing, she started to tackle the mound of work ahead of her.

Lily was avoiding the common room at all costs. Then again, she was avoiding anywhere that she knew Potter would be. Halloween was probably the most memorable experience in the worst way and all she wanted to do was forget it. With a small stack of books in her arms, Lily entered the Great Hall. Making her way towards the Gryffindor tables she caught sight of Emma at the neighboring Hufflepuff tables.

Clearing her throat, Lily put her books down beside Emma. "Mind if I join you?"

She glanced up, both surprised and happy to see Lily standing there. "Not at all," Emma replied with a soft smile. She moved some of her books over to make room. It was nice to have someone else there. "Thanks for those Potions notes by the way. They were really helpful."

Sitting down, Lily smiled lightly. "Oh, you're welcome." She said opening her books, flipping through the pages, trying to figure out where she last left off as free hand fumbled around for a quill. "I'm glad they helped."

She smiled and then turned back to the end of her Potions essay. Emma worked in silence for a few moments, going back and forth between the text and her notes, along with the ones Lily had leant her. She glanced over at Lily and thought about asking her about what happened with James, but decided against it.

Turning away from her books, Lily searched her satchel. Apparently that was the one thing she had forgotten to bring, her mind was somewhere else today. "Emma, do you have an extra quill by chance? I must've left all mine in the dorm."

"Sure." Emma reached into her bag and pulled out another quill, handing it over to the redhead. "Is everything alright, Lily? You seem a little flustered. She couldn't help but asking, really. She didn't seem herself, from what little she knew of her.

"Thanks." She said taking the quill. Lily hadn't really thought about it, maybe Halloween had gotten to her more than she had like. But she had hoped that no one really noticed. "I'm just having an off day. Wrong side of the bed and all." Lily said with a weak smile.

She smiled back. "Do you want to talk about it?" she asked. Emma knew that they weren't terribly good friends, but it would be nice to change that. Emma didn't have many friends outside of James and Remus and their friends.

"Talk about?" She raised her brow as she scribbled a few notes down on her parchment. Apparently, she is better at hiding things from Potter & co, than others. Lily wrote a few quick things before putting the quill down and turning back to Emma. "He just doesn't know when to stop. He thinks it's endearing."

Emma put her quill down on top of her nearly finished essay. "Is that what bothers you about him?" she asked kindly, soft smile on her face. "Because I think he means well." She returned to her Potions essay, managing to sound half-way intelligent as she moved the parchment over to dry. Last thing she needed was points off for a smudge.

"I have a whole list of things about him that bothers me." Lily said, scoffing slightly. Going down the list mentally, she couldn't even think of a possible thing that she liked about him.

She laughed very softly. "A whole list?" Poor James. Emma wondered if he'd want her to try and smooth over the situation. She wasn't sure as she hadn't seen much of him lately. "Is he really that bad?"

"Yea..." Lily nodded with a small laugh. "He has always been a prat to Severus. Obnoxious towards me and other students. He is convinced that he can do whatever he wants with no consequences. He is --" She cut herself off not wanting to ramble. "I think you know where I am heading."

Emma looked at her essay and rolled it up. "I have an idea. But honestly, he means well. At least I think he does when it comes to you." Emma didn't think he was too bad.

Lily didn't like the sound of that, she didn't like that one bit. Usually when James said that another stupid had a jinx set upon them. Or Remus was missing from Prefect duties, or something else went wrong. ".....alllllright...." She said a bit uneasy with her brow raised as she picked up the quill.

Emma reached for fresh parchment to begin her Defense essay. She shrugged in response to Lily's comment. "He does have his moments, though, doesn't he?" she said with a light laugh. She was thinking of what he'd said to her at the dance again and tried to shake it off.

"Moments? I'm thinking it's a phase that's just last the entirety of Hogwarts so far." Lily said smiling, the quill scratching away at the parchment as she read through the pages of the book before her.

She laughed. "Probably." Her own essay progressed slowly, pages turning here and there. "He's friends aren't all bad though," she found herself saying.

"Don't you mean all his friends aren't bad?" Lily said changing the semantics of the sentence. "Remus is a perfectly alright boy," She looked up for a moment as she turned a page. "Although, he does get sick quick often. Black on the other hand is another one I like to stay away from." She scoffed lightly in breath as she looked over the page quickly and turned it. "Peter is alright as well."

Emma laughed softly. "I suppose that's what I meant. Remus is nice, I agree." She chose not to say any more on that subject, looking down at her paper as Lily continued on about the rest of James' friends. It took her a moment to realize that the other girl had finished summing up the boys. "Yes, Peter is rather nice."

She didn't say anymore. A topic that came up often enough, she never quite knew it why it was always related to her. She found something related to her essay and began to scribble somethings down on her parchment for her essay. "How is your cold? Are you feeling any better?"

Emma smiled. "I'm much better now. Thanks. Remus insisted I go see Madame Pomfrey. But my dad always thought that colds shouldn't be cured with magic..." she trailed off a little. "Suppose my dad was just trying to be character building or something." It was nice to be able to work with someone and talk to them at the same time. She found some more facts for her essay and was attempting to fit them into her assingment.

"I'm not sure what my mum would say about magical aliments for the common cold, let alone other maladies." Lily had never really though about it. her mother would use so many of her home remedies, most of the other student would probably turn their noses up at her. "Sometimes all you need is warm liquids and best rest. Although, you wouldn't want it to interfere with your work."

"That's what my dad used to say. His grandmother was a Muggle and she said she never really understood all the magical treatments and that sometimes the Muggle way worked for a reason." She allowed herself a smile.

"Sometimes there is not reason to intervene. Just let things take its course." Lily said as she crossed a double 't' in a word. "To tell you the truth, I think some people rely to much on magic."

Emma was aware that Lily was Miggle-born. "I can agree with that on some levels. There is a certain satisfaction in doing something for yourself." Not in dishes or cleaning out a storeroom, but in creating something with your own two hands and not a wand.

"There really is." She said looking up with a warm smile. "I don't understand how all these witches cook with magic. Now don't get me wrong it tastes delectable. Yet, don't they know the pleasure in cooking or baking?" Realizing that her voice has risen slightly, Lily smiled weakly and twirled the quill between her fingers. "I'm just saying...."

Emma smiled. "My parents wouldn't use magic to make dinner unless they were in a hurry for the exact same reason. When my mum is in the kitchen, she's completely focused on what she's making rather than everything else that's going on in her life." She definitely understood what Lily was saying.
