Who wouldn't want Christmas muffins?

Who: Emma and James
When: Friday after classes, week before the game between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw
Where: outside the Great Hall
What: MUFFINS!!!!

Emma made her way down to the Great Hall after she'd dropped her books off in her dorm. She'd not been surprised to find her cat no where in sight.  Izzie was probably around spreading Christmas cheer with her colorful ribbon collar and her playful disposition.  The hall was deserted and James was no where to be seen.  This didn't bother Emma and she sat on the stone floor, looking up at the giagantic Christmas trees that had taken up residence in the entry way the day before.  She loved Christmas, the smells, the sounds, the music.  She loved to spend time with her family and relax.  This Christmas, she knew, would be different without her father and her aunt. But she hoped that she and her mum could create some new traditions.

"Thanks," she said as he helped her up.

"Peppermint belongs in things like cocoa. Not muffins," she said with a laugh, especially at the look on his face. "Let's head down."

Smiling, Emma walked along with him. "So, has the Chirstmas spirit gotten to you yet?"

James shrugged a bit as they walked.

"I suppose so. It's kind of hard to get into the holidays with all the work they pile on us." He looked around at all the decorations and couldn't help but smile a bit. "It is nice, though... the decorations and such." He walked along and then glanced at Emma, tilting his head a bit.

"So what would you like for Christmas, Emma?"

"I can agree with that." The work load did seem to get heavier as the holidays approached. "Between the work and Quidditch practice for the game next week, the holiday spirit is like a stress releaver." She smiled at the garlands and things adoring the castle. "Besides, I love this time of year. The snow, the scents. Just everything about it."

Emma looked over at her friend. "Me?" She thought for a moment. "I don't really know."

"Yeah," James said in a thoughtful tone, "I do love the snow. So much fun things to do with it." He grinned just thinking of the mischief that could be caused. "We should have a proper snowball fight one of these days."

He arrived outside of the kitchens and quickly tickled the pear. He stood aside so that Emma could enter first. "And you must decide on a gift! I'm hopeless at buying proper gifts for girls..."

"That would be wonderful!" she said, more than up for a snowball fight. "I hope we get a good enough snow for it before the holidays." Emma grinned at him, knowing he was planning on nailing certain people with snowballs. She knew him well enough to know that about it.

The scents that hit her the moment she walked into the kitchen were heavenly. "Honestly, James, you don't have to get me anything." In truth, she'd been trying to figure out what to get him. Perhaps a good book. That would be better for Remus.

James joined Emma in the kitchen and quickly asked one of the elves to get them a tray of all the new muffins. He smiled at Emma and wondered to himself why it was so easy to get along with her when he could barely talk to certain girls without starting a fight.

"It'll be the perfect way to release some tension, don't you think? And it had better snow before the break... I wonder if there's some spell to make it snow all over the grounds." He lead Emma over to a table and pulled out a chair.

"And of course I'm getting you something! I just have to think of what."

It was interesting that her thoughts were similar and she was pondering why she could get on so well with James and not have developed a crush to make things awkward. She wished Kitty was still here, so she could at least confide in her aunt.

Emma sat, thanking him for pulling out her chair. She smiled at him. "Well, I'm sorry I lack a suggestion at the moment. I just have no idea. I've been so focused on planning for everyone else, I hadn't even thought about what I'd like." She smiled sheepishly, remembering a time when the first thing she did on the first of Decemeber was write her Christmas list.

James smiled and sat next to her. "How very unselfish of you. You're so different from most of the girls I talk to." He thought for a second and then added to that statement. "Of course, most of those girls are just staring at me or some other such nonsense." He watched as one of the elves walked over with a platter full of muffins and rested it on the table.

"I think that's why I get on with you so well. You're a lot smarter than a lot of the girls here." He smiled and pushed a gingerbread muffin towards her. "Try it!"

She laughed. "Honestly, James," Emma said, shaking her head at him. "You're quite a handful sometimes. A girl needs a sense of humor to get along well with you." There was a wide grin on her face and she knew he was aware she was teasing him.

Emma blushed very softly. "No, I'm really not." She accepted the muffin and took a bite to avoid any further comments that would make her flush. "This is amazing. Reminds me of the recipe for my great-grandmother's gingerbread loaf."

James snickered a bit and nodded. "I guess you're right. I am a lot to handle, aren't I?" He thought to himself that that was why he needed a fiery girl who could keep up with him.

"Of course you are! Don't be so modest, Emma." He smiled and grabbed his favorite chocolate chip muffin and took a bite. "That gingerbread loaf sounds delicious... is this a recipe that was passed down in the family?"

"But only in the best sense," she said with a smile. There were others who were a handful, but in a way that wasn't exactly as endearing as James was. He was very brotherly to her and she appreciated that, always wanting one herself.

Emma chose to breeze right over the comment about her intelligence and focus on the food. "Yes, it is. It's usually the first thing I make when I go home for the holidays. I'll have to send you some." That would be a great idea, actually. Send her friends things she baked for the holidays. Her mind was already going through recipes.

James smiled and got that cozy sense he always seemed to get around Emma. She made him feel comfortable and very at ease. He leaned an elbow on the table and munched thoughtfully, already starting to feel tension about all the little things melting away.

"Well, you know I would be endeared to you forever if you did that! I am a fool for baked goods." He munched thoughtfully and glanced at Emma. "Now you must tell me what you want for Christmas. I can't receive a gift without giving one!"

She laughed. "I'm sorry, James. Why don't you surprise me? I'm sure anything you come up with will be wonderful." Emma hadn't expected to be getting a lot of presents and anything from a friend would mean the world to her. She didn't really care much about the what gift was. More about the who and the why; being a friend and because they care.

"That sounds fair. I apologize in advance if it's wildly inappropriate or just unacceptable." He winked and grinned broadly. He finished off his muffin and started to sort through the rest of the selections. "Ohh... I think this is an eggnog muffin. Care to split it?"

"It wouldn't be from you if it wasn't unique like that, James," she said, shaking her head at his wink. He really was encourageable. Emma could understand what about him could rub someone like Lily the wrong way, but if she saw this side of him, surely she'd think differently.

"Eggnog?" Sounded interesting. "Sure." She smiled as she took the offered half and bit into it. "Not bad. I like the gingerbread one better though."
