Who: Regulus + ?
Where: On school grounds, near the lake
When: After dinner

Regulus frowned, lost in thought. He hadn't quite felt up to dealing with the bustling crowds in the Great Hall and left as soon as he could. It was frustrating him, this indecisiveness he felt. His talk with Bellatrix had answered many questions he had, and for that he was grateful. In fact, everyone he talked to about it seemed to be under similar opinions. Severus Snape had even hinted at discussing it. Regulus had begun saving clippings from the Prophet and keeping them in a scrapbook of sorts. The only one who didn't seem to agree was... Sirius.

Regulus brow furrowed as he kicked a stone along the path. It was blissfully quiet here. He heard the stone bounce several times before coming to a stop. He was nearly at the lake now, almost time to turn back.

Sirius didn't agree with him. Things were getting more...strained in their family, he could feel it. The last few owls from his mother had less than complimentary things to say about Sirius, and Regulus had no doubt that the feelings were mutual. But then, they had been fighting for so long, why should now be any different? He hated it. Hated the arguments and tension in a family that was supposed to be so pure and noble. Regulus wondered what Sirius had done recently to upset her. Detention again, probably.

Regulus shivered. In his hurry to escape the other students he had left his cloak inside. He sighed and turned back towards the castle, hoping there would be some distraction for him there.

Rabastan hated the lake. More than anything he hated the lake.

If there had been no lake he would've never been in it during his second year on a dare, and Rodolphus never would've played that stupid trick, and he wouldn't be about to puke right now.

He stood at very edge, the gentlest waves reached up murky tendrils out towards his feet, and his skin was practically crawling off of his body. Rabastan spit in the water and turned away. He could've sworn the lake laughed at him then. Just as Rodolphus would have.

It plagued his dreams, inky depths, pressure on all sides, coughing, retching, lungs filling. But none of that was as bad as the laughter, diluted by the water he could only barely make it out, but he knew, he knew it was Rodolphus. The dreams only came about once every couple of months now, and it always put him in an introspective mood.

Sighing in irritation he put up a quick jog, the chill was starting to get to him. Sighting someone ahead his eyes narrowed, Slytherin, oh yes, that Regulus kid. A Black, which as far as Rabastan was concerned for now meant a crazy person, between their Gryffindor bastard son and his brother's wackjob wife this Regulus should be a good source of entertainment, right? Rabastan caught up with him easily, couldn't let someone so young wander about on their own and Rabastan was a model citizen after all.

"Howzit, Black?"

Regulus turned when he heard his name. He frowned for a fraction of a minute as he quickly tried to remember the boy's name.

"Hello..." He said politely, "How have you been, Rabastan? Haven't seen you around much. Excited to be getting out of here then?"

Regulus didn't know much about Rabastan. He had seen him around school on occasion. The common room, the Great Hall... But he had never had a reason to talk to the much older boy. He was Bella's brother-in-law or some such rubbish. Not that it mattered all that much.

Rabastan quirked an eyebrow at the polite tone, but didn't mention it. "I suppose," he said with a shrug of his shoulders, "It's a little strange though, now I've to do something with my life. I'm definitely not staying at home, that's for sure," he shook his head with a short bitter half laugh, his father had certainly made that clear.

Of course, he'd already been marked so it wasn't like he wouldn't have some sort of direction. Rabastan could only hope that his talents weren't squandered under the direction of his thug brother. "You're young and smart, what're you gonna do when you're all grown up?" he asked, a biting mockery just hinted at in the sharp enunciation of his words, the narrowment of his eyes.

Truly Rabastan wasn't all that interested, but he had nothing better to do on his way up to the castle. The youngest Black didn't hold much interest for him, he was too busy being the youngest Lestrange. Too busy trying to prove his father wrong to pay attention to a kid who hadn't raised so much as a bleep on the radar yet.

"I..." Regulus frowned, "I'm not sure yet. But there's plenty of time yet, right?"

He shrugged, unwilling to go further into it. The innocent question raised thoughts of his last visit with Bella. No, he was done thinking about this for today...

Rabastan laughed, "All the bloody time in the world. Unless of course your parents are like mine and demand an answer a little sooner." The last was delivered with an indulgent smile, as if to say, you and I, we're both pureblood, we're alike. But soon his face was schooled into something more serious, "Speaking of family, heard about your uncle a while back, sad business that, you have my condolences."

Once more Rabastan changed tracks, features flitting to another indulgent grin, "But I also heard about your birthday, which quite makes up for a dead uncle, in my opinion of course, not having any uncles I wouldn't know," he shrugged and continued, "Get any good loot then?" Rabastan had little attention for topics that bored him, and as he assumed this would be the last time he talked with the younger student he might as well try to get all of the interesting stuff he could out of him.

"Nothing out of the ordinary. Robes and new quills from my parents, quidditch goggles and a book from Sirius," Regulus shrugged. Birthdays weren't really anything to get excited about anyway.

He wondered if Rabastan was always jumping from topic to topic like this, but let it go as he had no previous conversations to compare it to. Regulus kicked a stone along the path as they walked.

"It would make sense that you knew what you're going to be doing after school," Regulus said, casually referring back to the previous topic, "As you'll be leaving shortly."

Rabastan's lips quirked upward with humor, "Yes, I suppose it would. But if you're hinting that my parents are rather right to demand an answer from me, you might want to check how long those letters of theirs have been coming in. Only their right though, I 'spose."

He'd first received mention of it his second year, Rabastan could still remember the day, he'd received a detention from Slugworth and a letter had arrived the very next morning. There was, of course, the normal chastisement, the comparison to his "perfect" older brother(though Rodolphus surely had a record of more detentions than anyone at the school), but then the last paragraphs had been entirely devoted to questions about his future. Where was he going? Who was he going to be? And though the letter never actually said it Rabastan knew what they were really asking, wether he be their son after his school years, or a traitor.

Rabastan knew he would always follow in his family's footsteps. He had no reason not to. Like any young man, he merely was irked on the principle of the matter. The idea that they could command his life so much. Because really, what was a man with his particular skill set really going to do in life besides the obvious?

Rabastan stooped and plucked a blade of grass twisting it idly between two fingers. "So Black, how's that girlfriend of yours? I assume you two are still going out." He had seen Regulus in the halls once or twice with a girl, and a few other times, he didn't know her but had of course remembered the information for later. You never knew what could turn out to be important.

Regulus found himself nodding along absentmindedly with Rabastan's answer. It made sense, and was pretty much what he expected to hear. It seemed most children in pureblood families were being given the same direction, though some earlier than others.

"Girlfriend?" Regulus frowned, "Oh, you must mean Emmeline. No, as a matter of fact we aren't."

Emma and Regulus had barely seen much of each other for a long time, and their last encounter wasn't anything he particularly wanted to relive. It was bound to happen sooner or later, though it didn't mean he had to like the outcome.

"We had an unavoidable difference of opinion," He said casually with a shrug.

Rabastan quirked an eyebrow, interested. "Really? Well, sorry about that one then, Black. Of course, there are plenty more fish in this puddle for a strapping pureblood young man like you." His eyes glanced away off across the grounds for a moment, thoughts wrapped up on his own previous relationships.

All of them had faded quickly, Rabastan simply didn't care enough about anybody to really take time to consider their feelings. And apparently that was something required in a relationship. His parents had been talking of late about getting him out in society after his graduation, by that of course they meant setting him up with pureblood girls.

"Have your eye on any other fish yet, Black?" he asked casually.

"Not yet, no," Regulus answered with a shrug, "But then I haven't really bothered to look."

Not that there was anyone to look at recently. The only people he seemed to run into anymore were Sirius and his friends. Occasionally Evelyn would pop up out of nowhere, but that was about it.

"Things have been pretty dull around here to be honest," He added in an attempt to keep the conversation flowing, "More so than usual at least."

Rabastan shrugged with a half-smirk, "I suppose, but then I always think things are dull around here."

Indeed Rabastan, despite any 'worries' about his future, for the most part was bored out of his mind here in Hogwarts. The gossip mill ran the same old stuff that it had his first year, and to be truthful it still wasn't interesting. But then Rabastan's definition of interesting was a little bit different than most people's.

"Did you hear about the kid who disappeared on the Hogsmeade trip a little bit ago?" he asked suddenly, remembering the only interesting occurence of late.

Regulus looked over at the older boy. "That is the rumor going around. But I haven't heard much," He admitted, "Just that someone up and vanished."

Regulus frowned. It was definitely more than a rumor, the reaction from the teachers made that apparent. The castle itself seemed more strained than usual, everyone tense and speculative.

"I'm not even sure who it was. Have you heard anything else?"

"Actually, yes, don't have much else to occupy my time with other than other people's business," Rabastan said with a sharp laugh, "Apparently they showed up," he paused as if for dramatic effect, "missing their memory. But I guess that's what happens when mudbloods wander alone nowadays." Rabastan shrugged nonchalant, though the event in question had proved rather interesting to him.

When he had owled Rodolphus about the event he'd received a nothing reply, just some vague anti-mudblood drivel. Truly his brother was the most infuriating man. In just a few short weeks Rabastan would be joining up in his brothers rather illegal activities, there was no reason for all the secrecy. Rabastan fingered his shoulder idly, looking away in slight irritation over the thought of his brother.

"Looks like the teachers are going to be keeping a close eye on everyone for a while," Regulus replied. Not that it mattered, he rarely did anything to get himself in trouble. Not like Sirius, always getting a detention for something or another. Such a show off.

"Shame too. I look forward to Hogsmeade weekends."
